Outdated Home Trends That We Hope Never Come Back

Every decade or so, there seems to be a resurgence in popularity for certain home trends that we thought were long gone. After all, home décor trends come and go, and what was once en vogue can quickly start to look dated. However, some trends are best left in the past.

Whether it’s the return of shag carpeting or the resurrection of avocado-green appliances, these trends have a way of making a comeback, often to our collective horror. As we enter a new decade, here are a few outdated home trends that we hope never come back.

Popcorn ceilings

These textured ceilings were all the rage in the 1970s, but they’re anything but stylish today. If your home still has a popcorn ceiling, it’s time to start planning an update.

Wall-to-wall carpeting

Remember when every room in your house was covered in wall-to-wall carpeting? These days, hardwood floors are much more popular, and for good reason. Carpeting is difficult to clean and can quickly become stained and matted.

Fake wood panelling

Panelling was another popular trend in the 1970s, but it definitely looks dated now. If your home has fake wood panelling, you may want to consider painting it or replacing it altogether.

Fluorescent lighting

Fluorescent lighting is harsh and unflattering, and it’s definitely not something you want in your home. If your home still has fluorescent lighting, consider replacing it with something softer and more inviting.

Tin ceilings

Tin ceilings were once popular in Victorian-style homes, but they’re not really in style anymore. If you have a tin ceiling, you may want to consider removing it and replacing it with something more modern.

Faux finishes

In the ’80s and ’90s, it was all about faux finishes. Whether it was sponge-painting walls to look like stone or applying leaded glass decals to windows, homeowners went to great lengths to achieve a fake “designer” look. Luckily, today’s homeowners are more interested in authenticity, and faux finishes have been consigned to the dustbin of history.

Floral wallpaper

Sure, a few floral accents here and there can add a touch of grace to any room. But an entire wallpapered in busy blooms is just too much of a good thing. Thankfully, this trend has fallen out of favour in recent years.

Wall-to-wall carpeting

Carpet has its place, but it doesn’t belong in every room of the house. In the ’70s and ’80s, it was not uncommon to find homes with wall-to-wall carpeting in every room. These days, however, hardwood floors are much more popular. Carpet is difficult to clean and can quickly become stained and matted.

Brass fixtures

Brass fixtures were once all the rage, but they’re not really in style anymore. If your home still has brass fixtures, you may want to consider replacing them with something more modern.

While some outdated home trends are best left in the past, others can be updated to suit your personal style. If you’re not sure what to do with your dated home, consult a professional for help. With a little bit of effort, you can turn your dated home into a stylish and modern retreat.
